Yash Mehta
Project Intern
Client: Analytics Advisory Group (AAG)
I got the opportunity to work with AAG as a project Intern during my summer semester of graduate program. I had 3 year of prior work experience with sales and marketing consultancy back in India and was looking for this internship as an opportunity to take a deep dive in the field of data science and analytics.
I worked on end to end data model development to identify important attributes that affect the survival of cancer patients using CRISP-DM methodology. Ajay not only introduced me to this world of predictive model development and terms like CRISP-DM, but in a very effective manner, helped me understand the concepts of machine learning through research and information exploration. He has a deep understanding of data and can anticipate future problems which help as a guiding light for a person new to this field.
This experience helped me understand the different terms and phrases used in the healthcare domain which are important to identify the correct data set and attributes to be used for analysis. I coded most of the model on R language and used the same to create visualization making use of multiple R packages. I learned about some of the very important machine learning techniques like Clustering, Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), Support Vector Machines, and ARIMA modeling, either by directly implementing them myself or through presentation by other interns.
I used to work remotely from Boston but Ajay made sure to keep everyone in the loop with his regular meeting and status update reports. He helped me develop professional presentations which can be used to explain the highly technical topics to a non-technical audience. Overall working with AAG and the CEO was an enriching experience and I got to learn a lot of skills and techniques which I am confident would help me in my career enhancement.
As an advice to future interns, feel free to bombard Ajay with as many questions as you have, believe me, he is patient enough to answer all of them! He loves to see the inquisitiveness in his interns, and their ability to explore.
