Rui Ying (Sandy)
Data Science Intern
Client: Analytics Advisory Group (AAG)
During my 2018 summer internship at AAG, I worked with Ajay and three other teammates in Alexa Team. As an MIS student and future MSBA candidate, AAG offered me the chance to get know more about SQL and Python programming language, data modeling, and Amazon Web Services(AWS). As the team leader of the Alexa internship Team, I improved and developed my interpersonal skills including how to communicate and collaborate with teammates, how to make better schedule plan for the team and how to listen to feedback in a workplace.
Our goal for this project was to expand Alexa’s skill to the healthcare industry so that doctors or nurses would be able to get responses from Alexa by retrieving data from the back-end database.
Before this internship, I had no idea about AWS and lambda, RDS on AWS. Since Ajay was also new to this field, we did lots of research on how to use lambda function and RDS on our own. Ajay was always able to give us direction on where we could possibly go and where we could get help from.
By the end of this internship, we achieved the followings:
1) Developed new Alexa skills through running python code on lambda
2) Connected lambda function to MySQL RDS using PYMySQL package
3) Allowed Alexa to retrieve data from RDS according to user’s request by running the SQL SELECT statement embedded in python on lambda
4) Wrote stored procedures on MySQL workbench and achieved separation of concerns/encapsulation of business logic.
During the internship, Ajay got us to meet a practicing nurse and a scribe. In that way, we learned how the project could possibly be applied and modified in a real healthcare environment.
Overall, it was a pleasure to work with Ajay, my teammates, and AAG. Ajay was very knowledgeable, especially in the field of data science. More importantly, it is a great way to gain more experience, so feel free to reach out to Ajay if you are interested in working for AAG.
