Arjun Adapalli
Analytics Intern
Client: Analytics Advisory Group (AAG)
For my internship with Analytics Advisory Group, I investigated the current opioid drug epidemic in the US using freely-available online data. I researched extensively on the topic, met and spoke with healthcare professionals working on the issue, searched online for relevant datasets, and then used those datasets to create visualizations using Tableau.
This experience gave me a great introduction to the field of data analytics. I was exposed to some of the challenges typically faced in the field, from struggling to find useful and accessible data to dealing with inaccurate or missing values. Ajay’s guidance throughout the process was very helpful. During our weekly meetings, he taught me some good standard practices to employ when working with data, and provided helpful tips for making powerful visualizations. He also taught me how to approach and look at the data, and opened my eyes to possibilities I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.
Through my work on this internship, I was able to educate myself, as well as AAG, on just how serious the current opioid crisis is. I gained some valuable hands-on experience, and I feel more prepared for my analytics career.
For anyone who is interested to work with AAG, my advice to them would be to make sure that, for any given task, you clearly understand what is expected of you. Take detailed notes during all meetings with Ajay, and do not be afraid to ask questions. And of course, give your 100%. The more effort you put into the internship, the more you will learn and gain from the experience.
